A few days ago, some friends of mine were talking about a game and I called them nerds.
They replied (their pride sounding hurt), 'We aren't nerds, we are geeks!'
I asked them what the difference was and when I found their definitions not satisfying I went to dictionary.com for a GOOD definition-
NERD-
1.
a stupid, irritating, ineffectual, or unattractive person.
2.
an intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with anonsocial hobby or pursuit: a computer nerd.
Then I looked up Geek-
GEEK-
1.
a computer expert or enthusiast (a term of pride as self-reference, but often considered offensive when used by outsiders.)
2.
a peculiar or otherwise dislikable person, especially one who is perceived to be overly intellectual.
There apparently is a third definition for Geek which made me laugh harder than I have in a while...
3.
a carnival performer who performs sensationally morbid or disgusting acts, as biting off the head of a live chicken or snake.
My father calls any animal not a chicken a 'chicken'. Also, I just felt bad for the animals in general!
So to all Geeks and Nerds out there... I will view you with much more respect:)
